More in Common
Lorena Lopera and Jimmy Wyman
Lorena Lopera was born in Colombia and moved to Massachusetts where she attended college at Boston College and received her undergrad in romance languages and literature. She is currently pursuing a dual degree in social work and pastoral ministry from the same school.
Jimmy Wyman graduated from Hiram College with a degree in education and then pursued his masters at Lesley College in out of school time education. He currently works at Sociedad Latina as the After School Program Manager.
Jimmy and Lorena met while Lorena was searching for work. Ideally wanting to work for a non-profit where she could work with children, one of her friends mentioned an organization she was volunteering with and provided Lorena with contact information for a man named Jimmy, or as Lorena first knew him, "Mr. Wyman." She proceeded to contact this man who was supposedly "absolutely amazing." The first time she saw him, Jimmy was surrounded by a mass of children who were following and laughing with him. Lorena thought to herself then and there: “I can marry that man.”
At first they didn’t talk much, but after a staff retreat, which included late night talks and volleyball matches, the pair realized that they had more in common than they thought. After they returned, their desks were moved into the same office and they began to get know one another pretty well and pretty quickly.
"We talked about work, but we also shared joys and frustrations in our lives," recalls Lorena. "Our time spent together consisted of making food, playing cards and going to Target." And as their friendship grew, Lorena began to find homemade dinners and little bags of freshly baked cookies with little hand written notes. Jimmy managed to bake his way right into Lorena's heart.
Their official relationship began and 15 months later Jimmy proposed while celebrating New Years in Medellin, Colombia. He risked his life on an unruly horse and two proposals and five hours later, Lorena remembered to say yes.
