Equally Surprised
Rebekka Matthew and Mikkel Kaastrup
Rebekka Matthew and Mikkel Kaastrup Married in Nyborg, Denmark on April 16, 2011 When Rebekka Matthew and Mikkel Kaastrup contacted photographer Alicia Candelora of No Eye Has Seen, saying that they wanted to hire her for their Disney-themed wedding, she secretly rolled her eyes. Little did she know, she was about to witness Disney done right, and a wedding that would go down in the books as one of the most unique celebrations that she has ever had the honor of photographing.
The theme didn’t come from childhood dreams of being a princess or from a desire to have a fairytale wedding. It was instead, merely a reflection of who the couple is. You see, Rebekka has recorded for Disney in the Danish language, most recently with songs from “High School Musical.” She was raised on the stage and is both a talented vocalist and actress. Forming a vocal pop duo at the young age of 14, she and her partner quickly became a pop sensation in Denmark called “Creamy,” and in the 1990s they topped the charts with numerous number one hits.
Experts say that most often people marry their opposite, but in this case, Rebekka found someone who was much like her. Mikkel is a talented vocalist of his own and is currently studying at the most prestigious acting school in Denmark. He, too, loves the stage, drama and a great story. So, when it came time to plan their wedding, it seemed natural and fitting to make it very entertaining for their guests.
The wedding was held at Holckenhavn Slot in Nyborg, Denmark. When the couple first walked into the castle, they immediately knew that this would be the venue in which they would promise forever to each other. From there they hired their event planner, Andreas and Helene of Dawn Events, to make this day everything they dreamt of and more. The husband and wife team took happily took on this project with some of their staff hoping to turn the castle into a modern day fairytale. From there, they commissioned contortionists, magicians and actors to help make their vision a reality. In the end, Rebekka and Mikkel's wedding was more like a broadway show.
The day began when Mikkel arrived casually late to the ceremony atop a horse, while guests congregated in the castle courtyard. After making their way into the ceremony, flower girls and ring bearers made their way down the aisle carrying doves and walking alongside geese. As Rebekka and her father turned the corner there wasn’t a dry eye in the room, including Mikkel.
Following the ceremony, guests looked on with awe as villains made their way into the courtyard to have a sword duel against Mikkel to fight for the heart of Rebekka. Of course, Mikkel won and he and Rebekka rode off on their horse into the sun, while guests stayed behind and enjoyed the cocktail hour. Afterwards everyone went back into the castle where they were greeted by old-fashioned maids and tin soldiers. They were equally surprised when “Lumiere” introduced himself as the toastmaster of the evening and invited guests into the dining hall by singing “Be Our Guest” with Mrs. Potts.
Walking up the grand staircase and down the hall the maids sang and danced all the while. From there a traditional Danish reception of speeches and toasts ensued. After dinner was over the guests were once again led out of the dinner hall and down a narrow and dark winding brick staircase that was filled with bubbling red dry ice.
When they arrived to the dessert room they were met by an elaborate buffet, behind which was a live ballerina and magician. Just before midnight guests were guided out to the courtyard where Rebekka and Mikkel were to have their first dance (a Bridal Waltz) under the open sky. Afterwards they were once again led back into the castle where they were met by a live band. The night of wonder was concluded by Rebekka and Mikkel taking the stage and delighting all of their guests by singing “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life” from "Dirty Dancing." It truly was a night of magic, amazement and wonder; it was a Disney wedding.
