the most incredible day

Newport, Rhode Island

June, 2007

Med students Scott Sequeira and Maggie Hymowitz were in the same pharmacology class together at Boston University. One day, while Maggie was frantically taking notes, Scott was working on “The New York Times” crossword puzzle. “I was amazed by how relaxed he was for a future physician. I asked him if he needed any help,” Maggie noted.

Scott decided to take Maggie up on her offer however, the help he requested was not exactly what she had expected. He responded by asking what fashion magazine had four letters in its title and began with an “E,” which Maggie immediately knew was “Elle.”  When Maggie was younger, she used to help her grandmother with her favorite hobby—crossword puzzles—and took this as a sign.

She and Scott soon began studying together and eventually started dating. Three years later on Valentine’s Day, while vacationing at The Ritz-Carlton, Golf & Spa Resort, Rose Hall in Montego Bay, Jamaica, Scott surprised Maggie with a custom-designed, cushion-cut diamond ring and asked her to marry him.

The couple fell in love with Newport, R.I. a few years prior to their engagement and knew it would serve as an ideal location for their June wedding. They chose Rosecliff for the black-tie, ocean-side nuptials. After arriving via an antique Bentley, Maggie and Scott were “married under a gorgeous chuppah draped in silk and covered with ivory and blue hydrangeas, creamy-white roses and peonies,” she describes. "As I walked down the aisle, I was so thrilled to see Scott and all the people that love us surrounding us in such a beautiful location ... and to be walking down the aisle with both of my parents, one on each arm, it couldn't have been any better."

The chairs were accented with mushroom-colored satin ribbons that matched Maggie’s two-piece Monique Lhuillier gown. She also wore the same garter belt as her mother wore thirty-seven years earlier on her wedding day, a locket containing pictures of her grandmothers, and her mother’s lucky penny was sewn into her petticoat. Each member of the bridal party walked down the aisle to a special song picked by the bride and groom.

After the ceremony the guests were served cocktails and hors d’oeuvres on the terrace and lawn. “As we entered the ballroom at Rosecliff, the beauty of the room took our breath away; everything complimented the location perfectly.” The dinner menu consisted of three different appetizers, as well as the guests’ choice of rack of lamb, grilled native swordfish or roasted vegetable napoleons.  And the color scheme came full circle with their five-tiered chocolate and buttercream wedding cake.

Maggie and Scott took dance lessons in preparation of their first dance together to Snow Patrol’s “Chasing Cars,” which Scott heard playing late one night while on call at the hospital and immediately thought of Maggie.  “He was touched by the words and he thought of me when he heard that song.” Although they had to count out the first few steps, they moved smoothly together throughout the rest of it, concluding with a successful dip, which—to the couple—was part of what made their wedding the most memorable.  “It was the most incredible day of our lives,” Maggie exclaimed.

They honeymooned at the Four Seasons Resort, Great Exuma at Emerald Bay in the Bahamas and for the final night of their stay Scott planned a romantic, cabana dinner for Maggie decorated with rose petals and candles.
